Quote of the Month

I can still remember the night,
Remember the thrill,
Remember the flame,
But, I can’t remember your name.

I remember the warmth of your lips,
The throb of your heart,
The thrill of the game,
But, I can’t remember your name.

Lyric excerpt from “I Can’t Remember Your Name”
Words by Yip Harburg / Music by Bronislau Kaper

Intended for but not used in The Twins, working title of Two-Faced Woman, Greta Garbo’s last film, released in late 1941. The lyric was a reworking by Yip of “Why Can’t I Remember Your Name?” (excerpted below) with music by Harold Arlen for the 1936 Warner Bros. feature Stage Struck; it too was unused in that film.

The moment was, oh, so enthralling,
The moonlight and petals were falling,
I haven’t forgotten your kisses,
Why can’t I remember your name?

I see you with lilacs behind you,
In rivers and windows I find you,
I cannot erase your embraces,
Why can’t I remember your name?
