Response to the question, “How did the professors at City College react toward [students] from foreign backgrounds and with special social and economic problems?”

I think the whole thing can be summed up in a remark that Professor Morris R. Cohen once made. He was offered a chair in philosophy at Yale, and he turned it down and we wondered why. We asked him. He said, “Well, I can think just as good at City College as I can at Yale.” But there is something else behind that remark. I think a teacher is inspired by his students just as much as students are inspired by the teacher. And I think that one thing City College never lacked is the kind of youth that had a zest and an excitement and was controversial all the time. At the College it’s not just a matter of the student sitting down and saying, “Well, try to arouse my interest….” These kids were absorbed in knowledge, because they knew this was a luxury, and they were getting it for free, and everywhere else it cost money. And they absorbed it like children who had found a treasure.
