We had wonderful schools then. The teachers cared and took delight in the kids’ creativity. That’s where taste begins. [A teacher] took a couple of us kids to see Maude Adams in Peter Pan, and that was my first show. It was also my downfall, I guess. I remember I was so aflame I ran home, climbed on the back of my iron bedstead and kept jumping to see if I could learn to fly until I broke the spring.
