Musicals flourished. Songwriting flourished. Lyrics flourished. We didn’t have war then. It was pre-Hitler, and we were having a great time. America had a dream. We had a goal. We were all going to become wealthy. We would buy brownstones to leave for our children. There was no radio, no television. Now you press a button and you have instant entertainment. Now nobody even bakes a cake from scratch. In those days, baking a cake was a work of handicraft. Music was that way too. It’s canned now.
