I had loving teachers who taught me how to read Shakespeare, and encouraged me, got me up in front of the class to read my compositions. If a kid would laugh at something I wrote, then that would give me some identity, that would take me out of the fact that I was downtrodden and a nobody. I began writing songs for the cheerleaders there and parodies of the popular songs of the day, and suddenly I was no longer a little slum kid. I had found a way of attracting attention–or, rather, being somebody instead of nobody.
